#32. FC/Kahuna – ‘Hayling’

Soundtracking cocaine trafficking. 

You know the song but maybe not the artist. London duo F/C Kahuna were Big Beat-era also-rans who made a small splash when this downtempo tune soundtracked a pre-Bond Daniel Craig’s coke-distribution exposition in the opening sequence of Layer Cake, the not-Guy Ritchie London crime film that you maybe thought was a Guy Ritchie film. ‘Hayling’ has also been in several other films and TV series; ironically, most of these appearances came after the duo’s breakup in 2003. Icelandic singer Hafdís Huld supplied the vocal; using live drums instead of a loop for this is a nice touch, too. It’s just so British and so late-’90s/early-’00s. When I was actually in London, all I could listen was stuff like this.
