#17. Martha Reeves – ‘Willie D’

What a funky lady.

From the 1974 Blaxploitation film, Willie Dynamite. Latter day Martha Reeves, who of course is better known for her many, many hits as the lead vocalist in the ’60s Motown girl group Martha and the Vandellas.

That jaw harp pops up. The horns come it. The bass comes in. I have no idea if it’s James Jamerson or not but it might be. Just begging to soundtrack a purple pimpmobile driving through mid-’70s Manhattan, which, you know, happens in the movie.
