#16. The Marmalade – ‘I See The Rain’

A quintessential nugget.

Airy hooks, classic summer of love vibes. Most easily found these days on the compilation Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond, 1964–1969, had the stars aligned differently this might have broken The Marmalade, from Glasgow, onto the UK singles chart. It didn’t, although the band went on to have a sizeable string of UK hits between the late ’60s and the mid ’70s, and one-hit wonder status in the US with ‘Relections of My Life’, faring far better than many of their Nuggets-era contemporaries, many of whom didn’t outlast the 1960s. Sadly, though, their biggest hit was a so-so cover of ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’ which was a UK number one in 1969. Skip that and listen to this slice of psych pop gold.
