Criminally dirty. Hypnotic beats. One for the ages. An epic in every sense of the word.
‘Krautrock’ is a silly term but I’ll go with it. Can are at the more song-y end of this really diverse, confounding genre, even if a lot of their songs are very long by pop or rock standards and this up there. The story has it that in the early days, Can would jam for hours on end, in a castle, of all places (where they were allowed to live for free – Google told me), and then bassist Holger Czukay would edit the recordings of those jams into something more comprehensive. Unconventional, hypnotically groovy drums and not a motorway in sight, at least until Primal Scream sampled it on ‘Kowalski’, but that probably deserves its own post someday.
